[02:34:11] <halibut> ... or maybe Ari was actually an account run by a US government agency that got its funding cut.
[03:01:27] -!- AlwaysNever has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[03:31:27] <chromas> It's a win either way
[03:46:11] <halibut> I cannot bring myself to thank DOGE for this. To paraphrase a quote I heard recently, I am not going to thank the person who set the house on fire just because they brought a cup of water.
[03:46:41] <chromas> It's true. DOGE didn't do enough
[03:50:38] <halibut> Technically true, for a level of ``technically'' that makes it kind of a worthless statement.
[04:09:17] <halibut> I see a couple of stories on the green site about geofence warrants. Apparently, the legality of these in the US is now being reviewed by the US Supreme Court.
[04:10:22] <halibut> I am a little mixed on these. On the one hand, it seems like an overly broad search. On the other, if something valuable disappears from a museum within the span of 5 minutes, it seems reasonable to ask that everybody currently in the museum empty their pockets.
[04:11:11] <halibut> The latter case differs from geofence warrants, though, in that it takes place in real time, as opposed to some unspecified later time.
[04:12:03] <halibut> ... but then, what about camera surveillance? Police can check that and see everybody who was in the building the previous day.
[04:12:18] <halibut> That seems like a reasonable thing to search.
[06:35:14] <ted-ious> Until larry and sergei and maybe peter thiel go to prison none of what they are enabling will get any better no matter what laws change or get struck down.
[07:40:11] <chromas> I always think of Firefox/JavaScript but I'm pretty sure that wasn't Peter Thiel right?
[07:40:57] <chromas> Brendan Eich. What did the other guy do that was so bad if not JavaScript?
[07:41:38] <chromas> PayPal. Yeah that is pretty bad
[07:50:23] <janrinok> Peter Thiel is responsible for Palantir and other invasive software that seems to be intent on holding records on everybody. It is as close as I have seen to the system shown in "Person of Interest".
[07:51:27] <janrinok> He is also close buddies with JD Vance.
[07:52:49] <janrinok> We cover stories relating to him where they are related to our topics, but AC seems intent on submitting anything that contains his name.
[07:53:18] <chromas> So ari did get his last SPLC check then

[12:00:40] <Ingar> Southern Poverty Law Center ?
[15:18:33] <fab23> Was Thiel not also involved in PayPal, and for sure he was the force behind the takedown of Gawker with financing Hogan for that, so also against free journalism
[15:20:18] <fab23> So in the end Thiel und Musk know each other also well, as x.com initial was for what paypal is now (not 100% sure about this)
[15:22:03] <fab23> from https://en.wikipedia.org Founders are Thiel + Musk (and some others) and "Elon Musk, co-founder of X.com—which merged with Confinity to form PayPal"
[15:22:04] <systemd> 05Error: HTTP 404 for https://en.wikipedia.org
[15:24:29] <fab23> systemd: I guess you need a better library to recognize URLs properly, because my IRC client does not have an issue with the , at the end of the URL and does ignore it. :)
