[02:31:54] <halibut> I think the best practice for passkeys is to have two. One key you keep with you and use for authentication. The second is kept somewhere secure where you do not access it most of the time.
[02:32:51] <halibut> When setting up authentication on a new service, you get both passkeys and set them up. Then you put one of them back in the secure area, and only use the other. That way, if you lose the one you carry with you, you can go back to the secure one, use it to authenticate and disable the one you lost, and proceed as usual.
[02:33:05] <halibut> Of course, you need to go get a new key so that you will have two again ...
[02:33:41] <halibut> I think, no matter what, you are going to run into the problem of: Secure, Redundant, Convenient. Pick two.

[07:29:47] <fab23> Today it is 40 years since the nuclear power plant in Tschernobyl exploded.

[07:47:22] <fab23> I wonder why Apple maps does blur it and Google not
[07:47:55] <chromas> Ancient scans from the '90s
[07:48:08] <chromas> Or maybe future scans from after The Event
[07:50:27] <fab23> there is a larger area which is blured, but with clear cuts on the tiles, you see it when you zoom in, e.g. just north of the Pripyat River
[07:52:54] <fab23> even the Google images are probably from before 2025, as it got hit in a strike in Feb 2025 :-(
[08:00:31] <chromas> "I provided pages upon pages of feedback and suggestions. None implemented. Everybody around me "adapted" to the software, similarly how you'd adapt to having a metal spiked sex toy permanently glued to your chair."
[08:07:37] <Ingar> metal are the best, smooth and rigid.
[08:07:50] <Ingar> minus the spikes ofc
[08:09:46] <halibut> You need the spikes. Otherwise, there's no point(s).
[08:10:09] <halibut> (Does that count as having a sharp wit?)
[08:11:17] <chromas> Well, if you're gonna be anal about it.
[08:20:57] <janrinok> Chernobyl had 2 functions - but the primary one was secret at the time. It was to produce plutonium for the USSR's nuclear weapon program. This resulted in several shortcuts being taken during the construction to bring all 4 reactors online as quickly as possible.
[08:22:44] <chromas> not very nobyl of them
[08:27:45] <fab23> janrinok: oh I seem to have missed that part of information, as far as I know they pushed too far on a test run which caused the explotion
[08:27:53] <janrinok> It was probably the fault of that famous US native american singer after whom the place was named...
[08:29:12] <janrinok> fab23, you are probably correct, but some of the safety measures which would have prevented the explosion had not been included.
[08:35:42] <fab23> I recently watched a documentory about the Antonov AN-124 (from 2020), they also mention some systems in place to keep the plane stable during turbulences and also showed the maintenance facility in Kiyv, all looked very modern and high tech and I was impressed.
[08:36:49] <fab23> So it is really a shame that back then Chernobyl was under Russian influence but I guess we are lucky that it now is part of Ukraine, else we may still have radiation from it.
[08:37:59] <fab23> on the other hand Donaldo is doing great https://daringfireball.net (link in https://daringfireball.net)

[08:38:29] <janrinok> The control of Chernobyl is still being contested.

[08:43:39] <chromas> We are; we just don't talk about it much
[08:43:52] <fab23> (-:
[08:45:03] <chromas> and 'losing' a billion means we get a noice tax deduction

[08:59:37] <Ingar> Soylent Buttcoins come in Solid Metals
[08:59:58] <chromas> Smooth and spiky
[09:00:19] <Ingar> so the coin needs a design with a butt and a crown of thorns
[09:00:43] <Ingar> I"ll see what I can do
[09:01:47] <chromas> Would it be like those old coins with the hole in the middle?
[09:02:09] <Ingar> chromas: that is a great idea!
[09:02:39] <chromas> Different denominations too. You've got the Half Cheek, the Full Monty, and for larger transactions, you've got the Goatse
[09:03:31] <Ingar> the Full Monty will get a bulge instead of a hole though
[09:03:59] <Ingar> the Goatse is some kind of horny coin
[09:04:14] <chromas> One coin could have a face on one side, with a protruding nose, then the backside has an indentation that aligns with the nose for stacking.
[09:27:28] <janrinok> It gets my vote!

[17:17:29] -!- mode/#soylent [+v mrpg] by Imogen
[17:28:50] <mrpg> Question. Is there a way to send a message with the mouse in the IRC web client? I don“t see a [send] button.
[17:50:50] <janrinok> I don't think so. Once you have typed it and pressed enter it goes. what IRC software are you using?
[17:56:34] <fab23> I think mrpg is talking about https://irc.soylentnews.org
[17:56:35] <systemd> ^ 0303Kiwi IRC
[17:56:57] <mrpg> Right
[17:57:38] <mrpg> I have to [enter] I can't click anywhere
[17:58:45] <fab23> I am just testing it, but how to you type text? with an on-screen keyboard?
[17:59:16] <mrpg> no, normal laptop setup.
[17:59:50] <fab23> so why not type the return or enter key?
[17:59:53] <mrpg> There“s the text field and a smile at the right side
[18:00:59] <mrpg> Sometimes I'm using the mouse, it would be easier
[18:01:02] <fab23> I am using it at the moment, as fab23test in #test, and I don't see anything to hit "send", so only return / enter works after writing the text in the input field
[18:01:25] <mrpg> Ok, confirmed then
[18:02:53] <fab23> IRC is text based, so why should there be a button to "submit"? You can not write a multiline text anyway, so return / enter does what it does :)
[18:04:50] <mrpg> Yes but this is web-based, so I need a mouse.
[18:06:18] <fab23> mrpg: no! :)
[18:07:02] <fab23> mrpg: We just figured out that with shift-return you can write multiple lines before send, but then will show up als individual lines as it is with IRC.
[18:07:44] <mrpg> Ok
[18:07:44] <mrpg> I
[18:07:45] <mrpg> see
[18:07:59] <mrpg> 1
[18:08:00] <mrpg> 2
[18:08:00] <mrpg> 3
[18:08:11] <mrpg> I see 3 lines with shift enter
[18:08:34] <fab23> yes, but we see 3 individual lines (aka postings) from you
[18:09:04] <mrpg> ok
[18:09:14] <fab23> I could also paste multiple lines into my WeeChat input and then hit enter, and you will see multple postings from me.
[18:09:40] <fab23> Line 1
[18:09:42] <fab23> Line 2
[18:09:46] <janrinok> Is there any particular reason why you want to publish multiple lines all at the same time? It is possible...
[18:10:20] <fab23> janrinok: stuff which should be on two different lines, but yes this is very seldom the case
[18:10:40] <janrinok> Type what you want to post in a simple text editor. Cut and paste it into the IRC software and it will recognise the '\n' and publish them all at once
[18:11:13] <janrinok> We used it a lot during the discussion/debates about the change of sites to what we now have.
[18:11:19] <fab23> that is what I did with the two Lines above
[18:12:33] <janrinok> I seem to recall that someone actually managed to post a table that appeared laid out correctly, but I have no idea how they did that.
[18:13:02] <mrpg> 1\n2
[18:13:13] <janrinok> .. and to be honest I don't actually need it, so I am not looking for that solution
[18:13:24] <fab23> you need to have a fixed size font to create the table and your irc client should also display with a fixed font instead of proportional
[18:13:37] <janrinok> mrpg - we see "1\n2"
[18:14:14] <mrpg> nod nod
[18:14:33] <mrpg> LF/CR in a single IRC message = not really possible by protocol, but Shift+Enter lets you queue multiple lines visually before firing them all at once.
[18:14:57] <fab23> I guess \n does not work in web irc, there you need to use shift-return to create multiple lines, like in any other web based chat client.
[18:15:32] <janrinok> unfortunately, the dog is telling me it is time for his evening walk. Back in about an hour or so...
[18:15:46] <mrpg> Go, have fun
[18:15:59] <fab23> janrinok: enjoy the nice summer evening outside.
[18:15:59] <mrpg> What race?
[18:16:40] <janrinok> we are walking about 6-8 miles a day. The dog is a bracco italiano - basically a pointer/hunting dog with apparently limitless energy!
[18:17:15] <janrinok> He is getting fitter and I am losing weight - so I suppose that is a win all round. BIAB
