[02:23:04] <halibut> I suppose having one color that is really good at being charismatic and convincing would help. I never really got that color.

[06:03:01] <chromas> halibut: I'm not near enough, but the last time I went through there, we went hunting for a pizza place the map said was near us, then like a week later I read there was a shooting right around there
[06:03:17] <chromas> The demographics of the area were such that they wouldn't be mentioned in any reporting of crimes
[06:19:23] <halibut> chromas: I am not sure that means a great deal. This is the US, right? Aren't shootings in big cities pretty common? Does that make Portland somehow more of a war zone than other large cities in the US?
[06:19:26] <ted-ious> Oh yes that put a bird on it piece was the one I couldn't remember.
[06:19:36] <ted-ious> That's classic portlandia.
[06:20:07] <ted-ious> halibut: US cities are not evenly distributed war zones.
[06:20:24] <halibut> ted-ious: I have trouble detecting sarcasm through text-based media. You gave a modified Star Wars quote and a reference to a comedy. Do you have personal experience, or are you just quoting things?
[06:21:04] <ted-ious> There are bad parts of cities with lots of crime and violence and good parts that are safe and relatively crime free.
[06:21:32] <ted-ious> As long as you're not counting fraud or financial crimes. :)
[06:22:31] <ted-ious> halibut: My star wars quote was literal and my reference to the comedy is to give you an idea of how ridiculous the average portland enthusiast is.
[06:22:56] <halibut> The article made it sound like the city is not so bad, according to its residents, and only quoted the US president as evidence to the contrary. The residents could be sampling bias, but I am still inclined to believe that over the US president at this point.
[06:23:50] <ted-ious> halibut: Did the article mention that anarchists took over part of the city and turned it into a third world war zone in 2020?
[06:24:12] <chromas> Portland did it too?

[06:31:45] <chromas> PARC—it's environment friendly ;)
[06:32:33] <ted-ious> I'm not sure why but when it happened in austin there was much less coverage.
[06:32:51] <chromas> Did they all get shot and people went back to their normal lives?
[06:33:35] <ted-ious> But austin has continued to deteriorate and the mismanagement of the city has allowed the homeless problem to become so bad that property values reversed the upwards trend as people started abandoning it.
[06:34:51] <chromas> I think Austin is Texas' California
[06:35:24] <ted-ious> It's actually not too far from texas's berkeley.
[06:36:19] <ted-ious> It has been that way for decades but things have gone completely off the rails since trump 45 made everybody lose their minds.
[06:36:22] <chromas> insert "shithole" compilation
[06:36:48] <ted-ious> Austin is another place you couldn't pay me to go back to.
[06:39:04] <ted-ious> And if I went to portland I expect rose city antifa would eventually dox me and execute me for treason so that's off my vacation list too. :)
[06:49:29] <halibut> That article about the siege in Portland actually did not sound that bad. Unrest in a few blocks, day-to-day life largely unchanged, protestors largely peaceful but with a few troublemakers. ... but then it says that in those few blocks, at night, there are rubber bullets and tear gas. Kind of a mixed thing, but if the people living nearby do not seem too worried, I lean towards not too bad.
[06:50:10] <halibut> It sounds like you were not there, but I will take your comments into consideration as well.
[06:52:30] <ted-ious> Do I come across as the sort of person who would participate in anarchist violence?
[06:52:45] <ted-ious> Or would even go anywhere near it?
[06:53:15] <chromas> Maybe you just happened to be wandering by when riot broke out
[06:55:15] <ted-ious> Maybe I just attract that sort of thing like the guy who causes rain in the douglas adams book.
[06:55:32] <ted-ious> I think that was the last book of the series mostly harmless.
[06:56:20] <ted-ious> Mainstream news articles usually don't mention any of the shootings or people who have their heads smashed with bike locks so naturally that means nothing like that ever happened.
[06:56:36] <chromas> oh yeah the bike lock
[06:57:01] <chromas> Probably trying to open a Master lock with another Master lock
[06:57:06] <ted-ious> Was the guy who got stalked and murdered for wearing a maga hat in portland or seattle?
[06:57:44] <ted-ious> There's been so much antifa violence in those 2 cities it all tends to blend together.

[07:00:48] <systemd> ^ 03Man shot at Portland anti-Trump protest, the first shooting as rallies sweep nation
[07:01:15] <chromas> well clearly then he was a pro-Trumper
[07:02:04] <ted-ious> For example that in incident they fail to mention that the protesters attacked the car and that other cars had been set on fire in previous protests so the passengers were in mortal fear for their lives and willing to do anything to flee before they were killed.
[07:02:37] <chromas> rev it
[07:03:30] <chromas> Point to the tachometer and tell them You're helping the revolutions
[07:03:32] <ted-ious> I used to excuse that kind of biased reporting because it benefitted what was supposed to be my side but not anymore.
[07:04:07] <halibut> Nope, sounds like not a fan of Trump: https://en.wikipedia.org
[07:04:07] <systemd> ^ 03Killings of Aaron Danielson and Michael Reinoehl - Wikipedia
[07:05:00] <chromas> I noticed people have their Halloween decorations up now. How about some life-size cutouts of Weinstein, Epstein and Dan Schneider in the yard?
[07:05:37] <halibut> Not clear to me that that Wikipedia page is for the same incident.
[07:06:04] <chromas> Who even knows? There were so many of them
[07:07:10] <halibut> Yep. Different incidents. One was 2016, one was 2020.
[07:08:46] <ted-ious> I remember the patriot prayer guy because the technique used to bird dog him and try to justify the shooting were standard doctrine for certain activist groups.
[07:09:27] <ted-ious> Unfortunately for the gunman the feds weren't having it and they ended up filling him and his suv full of holes a few days later.
[07:11:50] <halibut> Looking back, I see my statement about you being there was unclear. I did not mean there at the riots, or even necessarily at the time of the riots. I was originally asking about what Portland is like now, whether it was the war zone Trump was saying it was in this article that c0lo posted: https://www.abc.net.au
[07:11:52] <systemd> ^ 03Page not found - ABC News
[07:13:00] <chromas> haha
[07:13:11] <chromas> so even the article wasn't there
[07:14:08] <halibut> Looking back, I see my statement about you being there was poorly written. I was not intending to describe whether you were present at the riots, or even around the time of the riots. I was wondering if there was anybody who had been in Portland recently, and could describe whether it was the war zone Trump seemed to be implying it was now, in the article linked by c0lo:

[07:19:53] <ted-ious> No thank you I am not going back to portland seattle or austin for any amount of money or social pressure. :)
[07:21:28] <ted-ious> Nor anywhere in california because it's overdue to be obliterated by a tsunami or new york because their tax department will chase you to the ends of the earth for the next 20 years.

[07:22:57] <ted-ious> But those require a huge crew so I'd have to bring many friends with me.
[07:23:19] <chromas> Sounds like a party
[07:23:30] <ted-ious> I don't know what a firebat is unless it's that cancelled project for putting firebombs on bats to burn japanese cities in ww2.

[07:38:02] <ted-ious> Lots of very deceptive reporting by the mainstream media and lots of credible accusations of shady police tactics and brutality.
[07:44:10] <janrinok> "shady police tactics and brutality" seems the norm for much of the USA. From my perspective, that doesn't indicate that Seattle is in any different state than the majority of cities in the US.
[07:44:42] <chromas> well nobody reports on police not brutalizing
