[06:56:46] <janrinok> Hi guys!
[07:49:31] <Ingar> morning janrinok
[09:04:42] <janrinok> Ingar, belated 'good morning' to you too. I had started painting and decorating and have done a couple of hours work so far. Now time for a break (and a french lesson) and perhaps do some more this afternoon.

[19:36:33] <chromas> hm, I thought optical fibers were already hollow. Glad they invented it again

[23:22:11] <kolie> trump wants to rename the DoD to DofWar
[23:24:10] <chromas> Oh noes, the DoW is down again today
[23:36:43] <halibut> I think the majority of optical fibers actually have a glass core in a glass outer layer. The two parts have some sort of impurity doping that makes their indices of refraction differ, which is what confines the light to the core.
[23:37:11] <halibut> Hollow fibers, or air-core fibers, have been around a while ... but I am not sure why they are not what are used commercially.
[23:38:14] <halibut> Never mind. The article actually very briefly covers that.
[23:40:52] <halibut> I think, though, that it uses an ambiguous term, ``transmission speed''. They use it to mean how fast the light travels in the fiber. It is faster in air-core fibers, so that would mean lower lag (or ping times) in transmission trips.
[23:41:18] <halibut> However, another common use of ``transmission speed'' is bits per second, and I do not think this technology affects that (but the larger bandwidth it offers might).
[23:50:24] <kolie> the pass key discussion I don't get the anti pass key fud.
[23:50:57] <kolie> people seem to have a problem with a specific implementation of it but its kind of funny cause, well don't use that implementation?
