[07:28:59] <Ingar> in new inkjet printers, the cartridge will be a subscription
[07:29:17] <Ingar> but the ink will be charged separately
[07:29:55] <Ingar> it will be greenwashed as "so much caretridges saved from the garbage"
[07:30:14] * Ingar sends resumee to HP
[08:40:33] <chromas> The cartridges will be required but not have any ink. You'll have to download it from the internets
[09:21:47] <janrinok> $GREETING_ACCORDING_TO_YOUR_LOCAL_TIME from me!
[09:23:30] <janrinok> I managing to keep to my (slow) schedule for redecorating the hour. I can on a good day, paint the wall in one room. The woodwork requires another day and a half. But I can only manage 4 days a week at most.
[09:24:10] <janrinok> so it is taking about 2 weeks per room (because I have to move all the furniture too!)
[09:24:32] <janrinok> *redecorating the house
[09:24:55] <janrinok> Just done another wall!
[09:30:21] <Ingar> darn that's so depressing
[09:30:31] <Ingar> janrinok: I'm still in the "cleanup house" phase
[09:31:09] <janrinok> Have you sorted out your couch computer problem?
[09:31:57] <Ingar> note sure, I think I have several issues at once
[09:32:12] <Ingar> something amdgpu related which does a memory oopsie
[09:32:28] <Ingar> something gigabyte related because vendors still can't create proper ACPI tables
[09:32:35] <Ingar> something build related where the PC gets hot
[09:32:43] <janrinok> Ah, so it is not a problem with the hardware as delivered?
[09:33:11] <Ingar> if bullshit persist I'll start by switching to the iGPU and take out the dGPU
[09:33:28] <Ingar> I still think it is software, but I really can't be assed to install Windows toverify that :D
[09:33:41] <janrinok> don't blame you...
[09:34:00] <janrinok> which distro do you prefer?
[09:34:09] <Ingar> arch, obviously :-D
[09:34:40] <janrinok> is it worth searching for others who have experienced similar problems - or are you already well past that stage?
[09:35:35] <Ingar> I've wrestled with the google AI, crawled through reddit and jump over the duckduckgo
[09:35:56] <janrinok> lol
[09:36:02] <Ingar> there seem to be issues with amdgpu, the 9070 (XT) and it power spiking
[09:36:28] <Ingar> on the other hand, there's a fuckton of messages about (previous-gen) gigabyte mainboards having issues with suspend/hibernate
[09:36:36] <Ingar> so I think thoses are two issues
[09:36:48] <Ingar> and then I noticed the chipset getting HOT HOT HOT because fan curves
[09:37:04] <Ingar> must choose between whining 15K RPM fan or +80C
[09:37:12] <janrinok> I am a few years behind with GPUs - I am on NV RTX 4060 Ti
[09:37:45] <Ingar> I hadn't actually planned on getting a new PC this year
[09:37:55] <Ingar> but I want to turn my mom's living room into my living room
[09:38:13] <Ingar> (or rather, I need to)
[09:38:53] <Ingar> and cleaning out the parental home is a chore :D
[09:39:27] <janrinok> understood. The driving force behind my decoration is that the house was organised for a wheelchair so that my late wife could get around. I am now changing the layout (and decorating at the same time) to something that suits me.
[09:40:38] -!- x0908d3b2 has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[09:40:40] <Ingar> indeed, my goal is similar
[09:41:05] <Ingar> that, and the house is almost half a century old now, I'm somewhat legally required to fix some issues
[09:42:06] <janrinok> Yeah. my house was also built in the 1970s, but I have done a lot of work and improvements on it since moving in 18 years ago.
[09:42:33] <Ingar> the biggest issues is a roof with asbestos, I need to have it replaced
[09:43:02] <Ingar> looking at 40-50K if I'm lucky
[09:43:58] <janrinok> That is a big problem here too. It has to be done by a specialist company (or so I am told....) but I have removed it myself and stored it wrapped in plastic in a far corner of my garden.
[09:44:48] <janrinok> I couldn't do the job myself now, but I could when we first moved in.
[09:45:06] <Ingar> there's so much you "could" do yourself
[09:45:13] <Ingar> but in the end, time is also a resource
[09:46:01] <janrinok> Well all my time is my own (don't know how much of it I have left, of course, but I don't mind keeping myself busy within my physical limits.
[09:48:15] <janrinok> Going back to your computer, didn't you also say that the chipset was partially obscured by something else?
[10:03:34] <janrinok> getting close to lunch time. I'll have to work out what to have.
[10:12:31] <Ingar> janrinok: on my desktop PC the chipset is somewhat obscured by the videocard
[10:12:58] <Ingar> on the couch PC it has clearance, but it is a mini ITX build so things are thight
[10:13:01] <Ingar> tight
[10:48:24] <chromas> Have you installed the amd-ucode and certain linux-firmware- packages?
[10:49:16] <chromas> it used to just be linux-firmware but then they broke it out into separate packages that caused errors (because a new package owns the same file the old non-existant package owned)
[10:59:45] <Ingar> chromas: the machine was installed after the firmware package was split
[11:00:17] <Ingar> from the august iso
[11:01:09] <Ingar> I did add some ACPI related kernel params, maybe those will hlep
[11:04:54] <chromas> "on my desktop PC the chipset is somewhat obscured by the videocard"
[11:05:07] <janrinok> Can you run your mini ITX build with some panels removed to see if it is an air circulation problem?
[11:05:07] <chromas> isn't that almost all boards in the last few years?
[11:06:34] <janrinok> I can knock around 8 degrees off the running temp just by removing one panel but it might not be a good idea for a long-term solution to your problem.
[11:25:57] <Ingar> the panels are all mesh-like so that isn't too mcuh of an issue
[11:26:08] <Ingar> I might play around with fan placement though
[11:26:52] <Ingar> running IRC from the couch atm 😁
[11:28:51] <Ingar> and then I got a kernel panic
[11:34:59] <Ingar> http://ingar.intranifty.net
[11:35:14] <Ingar> c0lo will love it
[11:35:44] <chromas> I like how there's no log output
[11:35:57] <Ingar> actually, I scanned the QR code
[11:36:10] <Ingar> something steam is triggering invalid opcode
[11:38:14] <chromas> they could have just shown that on the screen though
[11:38:57] <Ingar> it's the first time I actually see this
[11:39:11] <Ingar> maybe because I added the systemd hook to mkinitcpio.conf
[11:39:26] <chromas> I think it's a recent addition
[11:39:43] <chromas> looks like the entire output is encoded in the url and the site is just there to show it to you
[11:39:55] <Ingar> afaik yes, but it seems arch linux specific (the QR code links points of something.archlinux.internet)
[11:40:13] <Ingar> it gives me a kernel oops tracelog thing
[11:40:38] <chromas> yeah I looked at it
[11:41:46] <chromas> are your memories overclocked at all?
[11:42:01] <Ingar> no I've turned everything down
[11:42:27] <Ingar> DDR5 @ stock 4800MT/s, CPU in "eco" mode, GPU power limited to 290W
[11:42:43] <Ingar> PCIe on gen4
[11:42:56] <Ingar> (it does gen 5 on both the nvme and the gpu)
[11:43:35] <Ingar> I can make it crash by browsing pictures in gwenview
[11:43:52] <Ingar> rather consistently it seems
[11:44:03] <chromas> same error?
[11:44:21] <Ingar> no idea, it is the first time I got this blue screen and this error
[11:44:30] <Ingar> I launched steam and the went browsing pictures
[11:45:06] <Ingar> I have that and hibernate/wakeup issues
[11:45:32] <Ingar> which is kinda weird because hibernate was one of the first things I "fixed" and it seemed to work fine
[11:46:36] <Ingar> I could ofx just swap the 6900 XT from my desktop with the 9070 XT
[11:48:12] <janrinok> Will you have to rebuild drivers if you change cards?
[11:48:26] <Ingar> no, both run stock amdgpu
[11:49:12] <Ingar> I even learned about some mighty fine tools as lact, amdgpu_top (UI) and xsensors
[11:50:34] <Ingar> janrinok: I even could run on the 9700X iGPU
[11:51:04] <Ingar> looks like it is pretty decent and more than good enough if you're not into demanding games
[12:11:21] <chromas> is your psu big enough?

[12:26:21] <Ingar> 850W
[12:27:06] <fab23> ah heater for the sofa :)
[12:27:16] <Ingar> chromas: it isn't my first build ;-D
[12:27:44] <Ingar> fab23: all in all, when idling or doing low power stuff, it is pretty efficient
[12:40:38] <janrinok> Ingar: which browser are you using? This might be a clue to your problem - https://www.osnews.com

[12:58:02] <janrinok> Not likely - but still possible
