[09:11:46] <janrinok> I thought that this was going to be another crypto story - Capital One didn't mean much to me. But it is a US bank!
[09:54:47] <chromas> nah, real, authentic fake money
[09:56:48] <janrinok> well, it can't just have disappeared. But it does not bode well for the bank, unless of course it is "too big to fail" and it is given more money to lose....

[11:02:17] <janrinok> There is no censorship. Comments submitted that are Spam, or made by some who is banned, will be removed from view.
[11:02:31] <janrinok> *by someone who is
[11:02:57] <philotecties> Who is banned, and why?
[11:05:21] <janrinok> Do you mean apart from you?

[13:24:55] <Bytram> Howdy! Last time I did this was on Windows... I gave 9 CDs that a want to store as files. I loaded the first disc into my CD player. Using Ubuntu, does anyone have a suggestion on how to proceed? Previously, I set it up to record at, umm, I think 360kbps (I think). How to I specify the "format"? eg: BTO'S GREATEST/Lookin' out for no. 1_01_360kbps.mp3 // BTO'S GREATEST/Roll on down

[13:26:21] <Bytram> OOps! Ignore BTO!!
[14:04:48] <Ingar> kick!
[14:05:30] <Ingar> Bytram: if you use KDE< the easiest way to rip CDs is audiocd:// in the file manager
[14:26:06] <chromas> I think he's using mate
[14:26:17] <chromas> kde of course is the correct option
[14:31:54] <Ingar> for mass tag editing I recommend easytag
[14:32:28] <Ingar> and renaming files
[14:32:48] <Ingar> the example above makes me cringe :D
[14:33:59] <chromas> random underscores
[14:34:44] <chromas> I also still see files with dots for spaces. I don't know why though; it's been decades since anyone used a filesystem that doesn't allow spaces on their pc
[14:37:16] <Ingar> the _ is used as separator here though
[14:37:25] <Ingar> but I prefer -
[14:37:44] <Ingar> The Corrs/In Blue/15 - Rebel Heart.mp3
[14:38:08] <Ingar> oh niet even, I actually do The Corrs [year] In Blue/15 - Rebel Heart.mp3
[14:38:20] <chromas> yeah I guess so. Using _ wrong :)
[14:39:16] <Bytram> Ingar: Unfortunately, hyphen are relatively common compared yo underscores
[14:40:10] <Ingar> Bytram: that easytag I mentioned can do mass rename files with variable names for e.g. artist, title
[14:40:30] <Ingar> so I just select a few albums and tell it to rename to %n - %a - %t.mp3
[14:40:43] <Ingar> (tag data needs to be correct though)
[14:42:02] <chromas> can it download tag data like picard?
[14:42:25] <Ingar> from an online DB or so you mean ?
[14:42:28] <chromas> yeah
[14:42:39] <Ingar> no idea, I don't think so
[14:42:46] <Ingar> but KDE does while ripping
[14:42:51] <Ingar> so I don't really need that
[14:43:01] <chromas> oh true if you're ripping then it's already done
[14:43:20] <Ingar> except for the odd album I have to look up on discogs
[14:43:56] <Ingar> I actually still have my father's CD collection to rip
[14:44:05] <Ingar> darn I had almost forgotten
[14:44:49] <Bytram> Ingar: Is that for RENAMING files after I have created the file? Or, a pattern to use in CREATING the filenames?
[14:45:24] <Ingar> Bytram: easytag, only for actaully RENAMING using patterns
[14:45:47] <Ingar> but in KDE you can setup up a pattern for creating them
[14:46:09] <Bytram> Rename sounds programmatic
[14:46:40] <Ingar> it has its uses
[14:47:02] <Ingar> to fix old files, or files from the grayzone
[14:47:44] <Ingar> there's two functions actually, rename file using tag data, or fill tag using filename
[14:49:27] <Bytram> So, potentially problematical, but good rename patters (eg sed) *should* cover it?
[14:49:42] <Bytram> brb
[14:50:12] <Ingar> except that sed can't read metadata from the mp3 tag
[14:52:58] <Bytram> or... I can just fix the outsiders manually :^)
[14:55:35] <chromas> all you need is just a command line tool to read the id3 chunk then spit it out into environment variables that you can pass into a bash script that fills in a sed expression that operates on ls output, then calls mv to rename each file :D
[14:55:48] <Bytram> Time to do some cleaning. laters!
[14:58:28] <chromas> actually, using find, you can -exec a script to call your id3erator on each file
[15:01:44] <Bytram> chromas: Ingar: FWIW, I only have 9 CDs to rip. Also, I suppose the rile/track info is avail online :^>
[15:04:02] <janrinok> Bytram, I would NOT recommend that you install KDE - it will only confuse you and add duplicate menu entries all over the place. I will try to find a better solution for you.
[15:06:22] <Ingar> well I do recommend you install KDE, just uninstall your other desktop environment :-p
[15:07:31] <Ingar> IIRC gvfs does have a similar plugin though, but never used it
[15:08:07] <Bytram> janrinok: Thank you! So I guess I really have two issues: what program to do the ripping and how to fix filenames.
[15:08:36] <janrinok> If you change to KDE I cannot help you in future.
[15:09:19] <Bytram> KDE-- :)
[15:18:52] <Ingar> Bytram: you can try ripperx
[15:21:03] <Ingar> old, but who cares if it works
[15:22:11] <Ingar> easytag is also gtk based btw
[15:40:55] <inz> I once implemented a damerau-levenshtein metric based pairing of cddb to local files for easytag, but I don't know if it ever worked well enough to be really useful.
[15:42:37] <inz> Seems that it is still included
