[07:53:04] <chromas> pretty interesting
[07:53:58] <chromas> according to wisdom of the internet, I don't have to pay debt collectors because I never signed a deal with them, but it looks like even if I do, I can just say I don't
[07:59:56] <chromas> oh I didn't know that site was the latest cory doctrow thing. I remember him and something about a hot air balloon
[08:00:08] <chromas> maybe it was an exkayseedy scribble
[09:01:12] -!- lilitsyunetsi [lilitsyunetsi!~lilitsyun@37.252.sq.ypj] has joined #soylent
[09:27:51] <fab23> chromas: it is an interesting read from Cory, the thing is, that companies sell the depts to a collector, and so if you ask for proof, they don't have it and the company doesn't care any more, as the sold the dept, and from then on the collectors even avoid to contact you :)
[09:53:41] <fab23> seems to be USA specific, as I am not aware of such things in Europe
[10:03:37] <janrinok> Does not apply in the UK, and I haven't heard of it here in France but, then again, I don't personally know anyone who has had dealings with a debt collector here either.
[10:08:11] <fab23> janrinok: I think the big difference is, that in USA most people live on dept, what is not really common in Europe
[13:57:24] <Ingar> well, most people I know have a loan for their house
[13:57:54] <Ingar> most of them only try to spend what they have though
[14:01:13] <janrinok> fab23, possibly - but the legal framework is quite different too.
[14:01:56] <fab23> Ingar: in Europe yes, in USA after finishing school and having the first job, they take a loan, just to pay it back to have a good credit histoory
[14:02:34] <fab23> I also buy only what I have the money for, for an apartement / house I may also lend some money.

[15:11:39] <requerdanos> I guess I must be playing wrong. I have my debts paid as agreed.
[15:17:41] <janrinok> Yes, I think most people do.
[15:22:42] <fab23> as the discussion on HN, in .us mosts debts are related to unforseen medical costs
