[00:06:08] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - New York Times Falls for “Obesity Probiotic” Hype - http://sylnt.us - basic-science-fail
[00:14:20] -!- TheMightyPhone has quit [Quit: Yaaic - Yet another Android IRC client - http://www.yaaic.org]
[00:23:32] <NCommander> Ugh
[00:23:44] <NCommander> I might be setting a record for NCommander novel with the technical documentation I'm writing
[00:23:50] * NCommander cracked the 10k word count mark
[00:28:37] <Bytram> NCommander: yowza!
[00:28:52] <Bytram> Is that for this site, or something else?
[00:29:25] <NCommander> Bytram, no, this is proving to the Tor project and other people who care about DNS that I'm trying to propose a workable solution to DNS attacks
[00:29:26] * Bytram notes his own last missive clocked in at only 1300 or so words.
[00:29:50] <NCommander> Bytram, what's scary I crapped this out in two days, and that's ontop of a 29 page grant application for this work -_-;
[00:30:00] <NCommander> I'm going to need a keyboard at this rate.
[00:30:03] <NCommander> ^new
[00:30:35] <NCommander> Bytram, https://github.com - 43.4 KiB of technical goodness
[00:30:36] <upstart> ^ 03NCommander/dnscatcher
[00:33:30] <Bytram> NCommander: Will take a look at it in a bit... thanks for the link! I'm curious about the updated .topic here... what/when did you have in mind?
[00:33:54] <NCommander> Bytram, I'm going to be slowly updating the other backend servers to Ubuntu 18.04 (at least the ones still on Ubuntu)
[00:34:03] * Bytram originally thought your writing was wrt our site/services
[00:34:38] <NCommander> Bytram, only me paulej72 and Buzzard can do a distro upgrade safely because we're the only ones with access to the serial port through Linode
[00:34:49] <Bytram> ahh, okay. Pls keep us apprised and with some advance notice so I can tag along and not go nuts if I peak in at the exact wrong time
[00:34:57] <Bytram> nodnod
[00:35:01] <Bytram> speaking of linode...
[00:35:07] <NCommander> Bytram, it shouldn't down any servers, unlike Linode, I know what boxes not to offline at the same time :)
[00:35:14] <NCommander> *services
[00:35:34] <NCommander> Helium which is our primary everything already got upgraded and nothing went bang aside the site lagging cause it was running on one DB node
[00:35:50] <Bytram> would you please update their notifications "stuff" so that when they plan maintenance, I get an e-mail? martyb (at) soylentnews (dot) org
[00:36:28] * NCommander looks
[00:36:50] <Bytram> I only found out about the last ones becuase we had that upstream comms problem that took out a goodly part of the east coast and when I went to see if all was okay with our servers, stumbled upon it then on the dashboard.
[00:37:06] <Bytram> obliged!!
[00:37:32] <NCommander> Bytram, ugh
[00:37:43] <NCommander> Bytram, it looks like they got rid of the old "Receive Service Notifications" option
[00:37:46] <NCommander> Bytram, I need to file a ticket
[00:38:23] * NCommander also disables mrcoolbp's account while I'm in here
[00:38:48] <NCommander> Bytram, we may need to give you unrestricted access to the backend. That option doesn't really thrill me cause I really want to limit people who have power to hit delete on the whole blasted thing
[00:38:49] <Bytram> oh, hate to see it happen, but is the necessary, I know.
[00:39:04] <Bytram> understood.
[00:39:07] <Bytram> ~blame
[00:39:08] * exec points at Bytram
[00:39:38] <Bytram> I know what I am capable of and have a strong sense of not muckng around with things unless there's someone else much more experienced guiding my hand.
[00:39:59] <Bytram> It took me ~90 minutes to update our certs on 6/13/19
[00:40:53] <Bytram> and that was with TMB and SemperOSS keeping a close eye as I walked my way through things. next time should only take me 10-15 minutes, but I'd still want one or both of them keeping an eye on me.
[00:41:49] <NCommander> Bytram, ticket filed with Linode.
[00:42:00] <Bytram> NCommander++ thanks
[00:42:00] <Bender> karma - ncommander: 119
[00:42:10] <Bytram> hmm, should there me an e-mail list
[00:42:17] <NCommander> Bytram, I don't object to giving you the master keys, but I really just want to limit who has them because if any if our linode accounts get popped, *RIP SITE*
[00:42:29] <NCommander> I really don't want to rebuild the entire thing from oxygen backups
[00:42:54] * Bytram dons devil's advocate cap
[00:42:55] <Bytram> have we actually verified the backups?
[00:43:07] <NCommander> Bytram, not recently >.>;
[00:43:18] <Bytram> like, umm, 5 years?
[00:43:22] <NCommander> Bytram, well, the Linode backups are verified
[00:43:34] <NCommander> We've even used them once (when I had to restore a fuckup on hydrogen)
[00:43:43] <NCommander> Bytram, but those get deleted if the Linode account gets toasted
[00:44:04] <Bytram> so, in theory, we could spin up a bunch of temporary servers, copy everything to 'em, and fire it all up?
[00:44:19] <Bytram> with appropriate adjustments for host names / ip addresses / etc
[00:44:20] <NCommander> Fair bit of reconfiguration would be needed
[00:44:22] <NCommander> BUt yeah
[00:44:28] <Bytram> theory++
[00:44:28] <Bender> karma - theory: 1
[00:44:43] <NCommander> Bytram, the only thing I know for sure we aren't baking up is lithium
[00:44:50] <NCommander> cause if the dev box goes *poof*, I really don't care
[00:46:09] <Bytram> oh, that's our dev server. got it.
[00:47:16] <NCommander> yeah
[00:47:24] <NCommander> If it stops existing, no one really will care
[00:47:31] <NCommander> We can recreate it from prod pretty trivially
[00:47:41] * Bytram has been having comms issues all day; occasional connection drop/reconnect and max 3G vs usual 4G throughput.
[00:47:59] <Bytram> I just got dropped twice in the past 5 minutes.
[00:48:41] <Bytram> think I'm gonna go airplane mode for 5-10 minutes, and hope I can get back on with a different tower / router.
[00:48:42] <NCommander> Bytram, you live in the middle of nowhere. The string occassionally slips out of the socket.
[00:48:56] <Bytram> ROFL
[00:49:30] <Bytram> this is NOT the middle of nowhere, though I will admit that a short drive could get me there!
[00:49:51] <Bytram> so, anyway... going offline for a bit
[00:49:59] <Bytram> laters
[00:50:44] <Bytram> NCommander: Umm, there is ONE thing on dev that differs from prod; the accounts that were created there for test purposes and which have different nicks for their UIDs than what is on prod.
[00:51:40] <Bytram> My whole automated testing harness depends on some custom accounts created there, as well as the different privs, karma, etc. that each user has.
[00:52:54] <Bytram> it would be a *royal* pita if I had to set all of that back up again... which is suggesting to me I should gather pertinent info about all those users for my own peace of mind.
[00:53:25] <Bytram> NCommander: which server is the dev db on?
[00:53:55] <Bytram> prod is on fluorine (at least that is the one I normally use)
[01:02:25] <NCommander> Bytram, it's on cluster, so the backends are neon/helium
[01:02:31] <NCommander> (we use the same cluster for prod and dev)
[01:03:02] <Bytram> ok, so I could use either fluorine or hydrogen, same difference>?
