[18:28:08] <AndyTheAbsurd> should be javascript===security
[18:28:26] <AndyTheAbsurd> since triple-equals is a thing in JS.
[18:29:44] <AzumaHazuki> should be != because javascript
[18:36:21] <AzumaHazuki> okay, let's see if gnome 3.32 is an improvement on its predecessors...

[18:45:05] <AzumaHazuki> so 3.32 is actually usable. likely not going to make this my primary shell, but i'm impressed, given how Gnome works internally
[18:45:16] <AzumaHazuki> now...global menu sometime soon plz?
[19:08:26] <chromas> like Apple-style?
[19:35:36] <AzumaHazuki> well, yeah, everything else about gnome screams "Lookit me maw, I'm one-a-them city-slickin' Macs, haw haw!"
[19:36:16] <AndyTheAbsurd> gross.
[19:36:26] * AndyTheAbsurd gets irrationally angry when forced to use a Mac
[19:38:20] <AzumaHazuki> the Mac OS topped out in 10.6 or so
[19:38:42] <AzumaHazuki> it's become rather antifunctional since then. ugly, too, since 10.10
[19:39:04] <AzumaHazuki> but it does a few things right, like Fitts' Law compliance
[19:41:40] <chromas> How does global menu work out on multiple screens? Do they all get the menu?
[19:43:49] * Deucalion sneaks in and slumps in the comfy chair
[19:46:33] <AzumaHazuki> i would guess so? i just have a 5+ year old T440s and move around a lot, so never had he stability for multihead
[19:48:40] <Deucalion> Move around a lot by choice or just victim of circumstance?
[19:50:25] <AzumaHazuki> the latter, though i try not to think of myself as a victim when possible
[19:50:59] <AzumaHazuki> speaking of, new probability waves have expanded the scope of my premonitions somewhat...a new possible direction for my worldline
[19:51:13] <AzumaHazuki> not one i want to take, but it may be my only choice depending on how some of the other ones collapse
[19:51:38] <chromas> I wouldn't want to switch to gnome 3, either
[19:52:26] <Deucalion> Yeah, "victim" is just a turn of phrase... I just meant as a result of how life pans out
[19:53:57] <Deucalion> Probability waves? worldline? I admit to being ignorant of what those might be :/
[19:54:56] <AzumaHazuki> It's all going to sound nuts, but...i've been doing spooky, weird shit since early childhood. i get premonitions, and sometimes long-range notifications of deaths
[19:55:25] <AzumaHazuki> this happened for the fourth time last month, when a relative i hadn't seen in 7 years popped into my head randomly. next morning i get an email saying he died
[19:55:56] <Deucalion> Have you recorded the hit rate on how often your premonitions come to pass?
[19:56:17] <AzumaHazuki> yes. they're fairly rare but it's over 90% at this point
[19:56:40] <AzumaHazuki> there is a perfectly rational scientific explanation for this. i just don't know what it is.
[20:01:24] <Deucalion> Whenever I think about these things, I do wonder if there's some cognitive bias at play. The example I think about is red lights when driving in suburbia - hit 3 or 4 lights on red in a row and the tendency is to think "one of those days - every light on red ~le sigh~" - then for the rest of the day every red light just "proves" it. Yet in reality the green lights in between don't get retained in memory because we cruise through them without
[20:01:24] <Deucalion> any cognitive effort.
[20:02:55] <AzumaHazuki> yes, i often wonder about that too. that doesn't explain things like the above with that dead relative
[20:03:36] <AzumaHazuki> hadn't seen him or thought about him for 7 years. he pops into my head suddenly for no good reason one night, and the next morning i'm told he died that very night? not bloody likely
[20:03:37] <Deucalion> Let's take you example of your long-range notifications - to measure the efficacy objectively you'd have to record every single time a relative or friend came to mind.
[20:04:10] <AzumaHazuki> they rarely do, given how few of either are left :/
[20:06:02] <AzumaHazuki> also, i don't know how to put this, but that felt "intrusive" somehow. not like a random thought, but like something pushed its way into my headspace
[20:07:35] <Deucalion> I'm open minded on such things and I don't think you're nuts. Just because we have no explanation for a phenomena doesn't mean that there is no explanation. I would be small minded to rule out the possibility of the explanation existing because one doesn't come readily to hand or hasn;t been discovered or understood yet.
[20:08:04] <Deucalion> Probability waves though.... what are they?
[20:08:33] <AzumaHazuki> i'm pretty sure i've pinned down the short-range stuff: something to do with magnetic and electric fields. i suspect people can read them a lot better than we think
[20:08:50] <AzumaHazuki> and that people give off much stronger ones than we think. and that they actually can "synchronize" to an extent
[20:09:26] <AzumaHazuki> people keep asking me if i'm a psychic or mindreader, and i keep saying no, i don't believe in that sort of thing, it's just intuition and reading body language
[20:09:43] <Deucalion> a.k.a Empathy?
[20:10:12] <AzumaHazuki> er...stronger than that. i tend to get instant reads on a person's character, and have lost potential friends by answering questions right before they ask them ><
[20:10:39] <AzumaHazuki> plus some people, i can feel when they're there behind a closed door or not, somehow. it's weird.
[20:16:46] <Deucalion> Seems like an extension of that innate ability most people seem to have of knowing when they're being watched. Look behind you and sure enough someone's staring right at you.
[20:17:39] <AzumaHazuki> Yup. Gotta be somthing to do with the E/M force
[20:18:02] <AzumaHazuki> my hearing and vision are terrible and i can't get correction for the former. so maybe this is my body's way of making up for it?
[20:18:06] <Deucalion> Or maybe that's just me randomly turning around and I'm always being stared at by someone as I'm so devastatingly attractive :D :D :D :D :D :D
[20:18:35] <AzumaHazuki> /* No comment */
[20:21:36] <Deucalion> Seems to be a common theory that people deficient in one or more senses seem to be or become overly sensitive with what remains. Can;t say I've ever looked for any scientific studies on that realm but it would logically make sense as even the fully sensually endowed can train or develop one or other sense if they desire
[20:23:17] <AzumaHazuki> my sense of smell and taste are really strong too. ...which makes preparing the N-acetylcysteine doses for the monthly Tylenol overdose attempters we get lots of fun
[20:23:35] <AzumaHazuki> that stuff basically smells like the pure, platonic ideal of rotten eggs
[20:24:16] * AzumaHazuki hopes she never has to handle the heavier Group XVI compounds...
[20:25:26] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Marcus Hutchins Pleads Guilty to Making Banking Malware - http://sylnt.us - Windows-TCO
[20:25:30] <Deucalion> I remember when I was a kid, the piano tuner that came round periodically to tune up our piano - totally blind and pretty much deaf - he was very hands on with the internals of the piano when tuning and got it pitch perfect. Didn't really think about at the time of course as I was a child.
[20:26:38] <Deucalion> Is Tylenol paracetomal? Don;t have that brand over here
[20:27:13] <Deucalion> *amol even
[20:27:14] <AzumaHazuki> Yes. People try periodically to kill themselves on APAP. it doesn't work
[20:27:39] <AzumaHazuki> well...it does work, but not like they want :/ it takes 1-4 weeks of agonizing pain as the liver fails, as one of the metabolites is hideously hepatotoxic
[20:28:10] <Deucalion> Thought it was pretty effective but nasty.
[20:28:35] <AzumaHazuki> so now and then i'll get a "Marissa, we need 1,000mL of D5 solution with $AMOUNT of N-acetylcysteine in it, *stat.* We've got another Tylenol glutton..."
[20:29:08] <AzumaHazuki> and my first thought is "Wait till he sees the bill. He'll make sure he kills himself this time..."
[20:29:52] <Deucalion> I don't really have need for painkillers thankfully but the rare times I do I'll buy Ibuprofen - paracetamol seems to have a reputation of being nasty crap even in normal dosages
[20:30:20] <AzumaHazuki> Oh, paracetamol is by far the safest, just keep it to below 3 grams/day. I never take more than 1 gram total
[20:30:36] <AzumaHazuki> NSAIDs aside from aspirin have all sorts of nasty CV effects.
[20:30:51] <Deucalion> Ibuprofen reduces swelling though I believe
[20:31:10] <AzumaHazuki> they work by inhibiting cyclooxygenase ("COX," hurr hurr hurr) enzymes, which stops prostaglandin synthesis and, yes, reduces inflammation
[20:31:46] <AzumaHazuki> problem is, with the exception of aspirin, the inhibition also prevents anti-inflammatory prostacyclins from being synthesized too, which overall causes heart and vascular issues
[20:32:41] <Deucalion> I doubt it matters much in my case - I probably buy one blister pack of 12 pills every 2 or 3 years
[20:32:59] <AzumaHazuki> Paracetamol is different in that it only works centrally, so it doesn't bring down bodily inflammation and swelling. also one of its metabolites looks like anandamide (endogenous cannabinoid!) with a phenyl instead of a methyl at the end
[20:33:13] <AzumaHazuki> i always wondered why i feel mentally better on APAP. this is why.
[20:35:41] <Deucalion> My use case is very very occasional gout like symptoms around my toes - Ibuprofen seems to kill the OWW as well as bring down the swelling enough to get my shoes on :D In the ideal world of course in such times I'd not put my shoes on and just rest up. But that doesn't pay the bills.
[20:36:01] <AzumaHazuki> ohh, yeah, i'd heard Ibu does better for that than Tylenol
[20:36:25] <AzumaHazuki> gout is a case of uric acid buildup and precipitation of same in the joints, though...
[20:37:19] <AzumaHazuki> i'm told high doses of vitamin C are helpful. probably you want an esterified kind for maximum absorption
[20:37:47] <Deucalion> Yup. If it were more frequent I'd bother getting a doctor to look at it. The rare times I get those symptoms it's always when I've been dehydrated for an extended time (many days) and eaten crap food to boot.
[20:39:06] <Deucalion> I take it you are a pharmacologist or whichever -ologist it is makes up medications?
[20:39:15] <AzumaHazuki> i'm just a technician, lol.
[20:39:30] <AzumaHazuki> but they have me do "specials" a lot, which are basically simple compounding preparations sometimes
[20:40:03] <AzumaHazuki> sometimes it's "here, cut these tablets in half and blister pack them," sometimes it's "meaure 0.75mL of this one drug for a baby in the NICU," and sometimes it's actual compounding
[20:41:14] <AzumaHazuki> ...no one believes i did geology and soil science in college =P
[20:41:22] <Deucalion> Whoops.... you said 0.75mL.... thought you said 7.5mL........ ~sprints off down hallway at top speed~ "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO......!
[20:42:32] <AzumaHazuki> you know, i've never once made that sort of mistake. i'm "detail-oriented" to the point of anal retentiveness
[20:43:01] <AzumaHazuki> plus...babies ;-; sick babies. i don't have children so my ovaries go into overdrive whenever a NICU order pops out
[20:43:35] <AzumaHazuki> just going up to the maternity wards and nurseries turns me into a big pile of jello, lol
[20:47:09] <Deucalion> awww
[20:48:29] <Deucalion> I prefer fixing 'puters and networks - no-one is going to die if I have an off day.... get pissed off sure, but in the grand scheme of things it's all irrelevant
[20:49:59] <AzumaHazuki> i'd love to do that sort of work, but it's not for me. people don't like women technicians, and i don't know enough Windows to be really useful
[20:50:09] <AzumaHazuki> plus, this seems to be my calling. was always interested in organic chem
[20:50:55] <AzumaHazuki> just hoping like hell i get to keep this one...
[20:52:15] <Deucalion> I'd not recommend it to anyone these days - it's a sexist and ageist field - and the pay is appalling. Anything remotely interesting has been off-shored as well. But much like morticians, there'll always be a need for the hands on guy on the spot.
[20:53:00] <AzumaHazuki> right...my main motive for getting into healthcare is they can't outsource it to the Peoples' Republic of Asscrackistan
[20:54:10] <Deucalion> True - but they can import the Asscrackistanians they need, indenture them by visa conditions and crater the going pay rate.
[20:54:36] <AzumaHazuki> indeed, and i see it happening already :/ but this is safer for me than IT work
[20:54:51] <Deucalion> But it'll be fine - the walls will be built any time now :D
[20:54:58] <AzumaHazuki> especially since i'm the only newbie left of the ones hired in latr December. One got pregnant and quit, and one got fired
[20:55:22] <AzumaHazuki> so the boss would be an idiot to get rid of me too, especially because i'm damn fast and actually pretty good at this
[20:56:17] <Deucalion> Hope it works out
[20:56:24] <AzumaHazuki> me too...then again, I learned a long time ago never to assume anyone is a rational actor, and he's one of the few people I cannot read. At all. Which is scary because most of the others like that i've run into turned out to be actual sociopaths
[20:56:50] <AzumaHazuki> it's rare for people to be able to put up that kind of psychic wall. it makes me feel like i've been blinded ><
[20:57:02] <Deucalion> Sounds about right. Nothing to tune into as there is no feeling.
[20:57:22] <Deucalion> It's not a wall, it's that there is nothing to tune into to begin with
[20:57:32] <AzumaHazuki> i've been applying for other jobs just in case, and have made friends who are acting as references. i don't trust him to do the right thing and am not going to stake my life on it
[21:01:55] <Deucalion> Good to plan your next step before you need it. Also good not to burn bridges on the way out no matter the situation - word gets around, even if the word is complete BS most will fall for the "no smoke without fire" kind of thinking.
[21:03:21] <AzumaHazuki> right. i fucking hate playing these fucking games, but people gossip. women especially.
[21:03:39] <AzumaHazuki> i know one of them is talking about me behind my back, but i've already shut her down in the best possible way
[21:05:55] -!- Web_weasel has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[21:09:07] <Deucalion> Meh, just ignore it, not worth getting wound up about. Sure sign they have either nothing better to yack about or bigger problems of their own that they are diverting themselves from. Just do your thing.
[21:10:35] <AzumaHazuki> that's the plan, yes, but this sort of thing ruins careers if not nipped in the bud
[21:11:07] <AzumaHazuki> i have 40+ year plans around this place. I refuse to just let some petty backstabbing passive-aggressive wrinkly old Judas in high heels fuck it up for me
[21:11:56] <AzumaHazuki> the problem, though, is threefold: I'm huge for a woman (5'10"), kind of scary looking (knee-length almost straight black hair, permanent Grumpy Cat face), and have terrible hearing
[21:11:59] <Deucalion> Depends. If they have a history of being like that they are likely to be ignored
[21:12:32] <AzumaHazuki> i can't take chances. this one seems to think i'm insubordinate because i missed something she said about an epidural cartridge, and has been spreading rumors
[21:12:55] <AzumaHazuki> it's a good thing i made friends quickly, and people don't seem to like her much, but it's bullshit that this is even happening to begin with
[21:14:48] <Deucalion> As above ^ if it were me, I'd just not engage in the Judas' game, just get sucked down to their level that way. Be the better woman and be seen to be so.
[21:15:02] <AzumaHazuki> right, that's what i'm doing.
[21:15:27] <AzumaHazuki> i didnt mention the hearing problems in the interview though (because come on, i'm not fucking dumb...) so the boss may be feeling blindsided
[21:15:55] <AzumaHazuki> on the other hand, it's a lot easier to prove discrimination after hiring than before it, and i've absorbed plenty of city, state, and federal law on the subject...
[21:16:15] <Deucalion> Are you required to? And does it affect your ability to do the job?
[21:16:57] <AzumaHazuki> no, and (for the most part) no. i do have to have people repeat things sometimes, but that's all
[21:17:31] <AzumaHazuki> i'm always available, learn stupid fast, move stupidly fast*er,* and have near-perfect accuracy. so in theory there shouldn't be an issue. in practice, the boss may be feeling betrayed
[21:20:46] <Deucalion> And 5'10" is not exactly giantess levels of tall - not really notable on this side of the pond tbh, just taller than avg. Perhaps you should move to Holland (Netherlands) - you'd feel short there....
[21:21:41] <AzumaHazuki> LOL, yeah, I heard
[21:22:08] <AzumaHazuki> a friend says "your problem is you look like sailor jupiter but act like sailor mercury. you're a tiny 5' sub on the inside"
[21:22:26] <AzumaHazuki> this isn't really true? But i can kinda see the comparison, lol
[21:23:47] <Deucalion> Meh, feelings of betrayal like any feeling will subside (if they even exist) - particularly if you just do a good job and don't get involved in a tit for tat pointless engagement with the harridan who the boss probably also is sick of hearing from.
[21:24:34] <AzumaHazuki> bingo. i'm trying to stay way the hell out of the boss's sight, make more friends, get along well, and keep whooping unit-dosed ass as usual :)
[21:25:23] <AzumaHazuki> probation period is over on 4 May. Hopefully by then I've got another job lined up if the boss turns out to be the kind of dangerous, evil fool I hope isn't but suspect he is
[21:26:58] <Deucalion> Not too long to wait to find out... just 2 weeks :D Get past that and you'll be past that waiting for the other shoe to fall of the giant's foot feeling. Best of luck.
[21:27:58] <AzumaHazuki> i have no luck. i rolled a natural zero for luck when my character sheet was being created (which is when the dice stop in mid air, flip you off, and vanish in a puff of flatulent smoke)
[21:29:37] <Deucalion> Makes two of us. Or there is no such thing as Luck and I was horrifically evil in a previous life and karma is kicking me in the nuts this time around :D Just got to make the best of it.
[21:30:17] <Deucalion> Anyways, gotta work tomorrow, zzzz for me.
[21:30:19] <AzumaHazuki> i wonder about that too...
[21:30:26] <AzumaHazuki> hope you sleep well!
[21:31:15] <Deucalion> Doubt it, too much coffee today, but not going to know til I try.
[21:32:30] * Deucalion throws another log on the fire and heads to bed
