[23:47:37] -!- Sulla has quit [Quit: Bye]
[22:46:17] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Tesla Burns More Cash, Fails to Meet Production Targets - http://sylnt.us - elon-watchers
[21:38:16] -!- pinchy [pinchy!~pinchy@axg-01-89-53-201.tx.res.rr.com] has joined #Soylent
[21:34:35] <SoyGuest64926> still on the lookout for a replacement
[21:34:04] * SoyGuest64926 reminisces about the old self-winding Rodaniahe used to have. 1960's, I think.
[21:20:54] -!- Sirfinku_ [Sirfinku_!~SirFinkus@a-75-623-671-658.hsd7.wa.comcast.net] has joined #Soylent
[21:16:57] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Western Digital Shipping 14 TB Helium-Filled Shingled Magnetic Recording Hard Drives - http://sylnt.us - we-can-make-our-tech-sound-funny
[21:08:34] * Bytram guesses they just wanted to leverage the devs more than any given existing product
[21:08:12] <Bytram> at one point, it looked like pebble was heading in the right direction, and then fitbit bought them out, and dropped the line
[21:08:02] <AndyTheAbsurd> no, the style of the Timex I'm wearing. Fairly basic digital display, and handful of buttons that do all do *useful* things, and that type of band.
[21:07:39] <Bytram> we are getting there, but the craze to pack more and more features into a smart watch, and given the state of the tech at the moment, one ends up with a freakishly large watch with limited battery life.
[21:06:49] -!- Sirfinku_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[21:06:48] <Bytram> lost me there... in which 'style' are you talking/ old-skool mechanical watch?
[21:06:04] <AndyTheAbsurd> Which no one is willing to make because the market is probably 200 people worldwide, which is not enough to justify development costs.
[21:05:40] <AndyTheAbsurd> now I want a B&W LCD "smart-ish" watch in that style.
[21:03:38] <Bytram> yuppers... nice one. I'm old enough to remember when a mechanical watch (no battery -- just springs and gears) was pretty much the only choice... if you could get accuracy to better than a couple minutes a month, you were starting to enter 'expensive watch' category.
[21:01:57] <Bytram> clicky
[21:01:41] <AndyTheAbsurd> Bytram: *this* is the exact one I wear daily: https://www.amazon.com
[20:54:19] <AndyTheAbsurd> Anybody got a Nerf RaptorStrike blaster handy?
[20:51:07] <Bytram> titanium is AMAZING! I'd be willing to bet that my watch weighs no more than your Expedition, the crustal is gouged out a bit (I'm an occasional klutz), but there's hardly a scratch on the band or the bezel.
[20:49:50] <Bytram> https://www.amazon.com
[20:48:03] * Bytram wears a 10+ year old Seiko... lemme see if I can find a pic
[20:47:43] <Bytram> nod nod
[20:47:30] <AndyTheAbsurd> rubber back, "cloth" top to the band
[20:47:11] <Bytram> it has the canvas-ish strap? or all 'rubber' ??
[20:46:46] <AndyTheAbsurd> The actual watch hardware looks to be the same, but it's a different band and different color.
[20:46:37] <Bytram> watches have the benefit that one can monitor the time without having to pull out one's phone and, thereby, tipping off one's boss that this meeting is BORING or that you can't wait until this chick flick is OVER!
[20:45:55] <AndyTheAbsurd> it's not quite this, but a very similar one: https://www.amazon.com
[20:45:35] * Bytram has sold watches (and jewelry) for over a dozen years
[20:45:15] <Bytram> I *knew* it!
[20:44:26] <Sulla> Wearing watches in 2017
[20:44:12] <AndyTheAbsurd> It is an Expedition!
[20:44:00] <Bytram> either that or an ironman model of some sort
[20:43:43] * Bytram guesses it's an expedition
[20:43:36] <Bytram> what model? (if you don't mind my asking)
[20:43:28] <Bytram> kewel!
[20:43:22] <AndyTheAbsurd> There is a Timex watch on my wrist right now.
[20:42:55] * Bytram just likes the fact that Timex is a well-known name for reasonably inexpensive and durable time pieces that also reminds me how to get the time in UTC with a minimal amount of typing.

[19:46:50] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Verizon Wants FCC to Ban States From Protecting Your Privacy - http://sylnt.us - fire-up-the-VPN
[19:38:15] <boru> I agree whole-heartedly that it's the F-22 all over again, but it'll generate more ROE than the JWST by orders of magnitude.
[19:37:35] <boru> See what I'm getting at?
[19:37:30] <boru> One of those is probably a entire years worth of observation fees for the JWST.
[19:37:11] <boru> SUre, but once the F-35 is good to go, people will start buying them. They're already buying them, even.
[19:35:37] <AndyTheAbsurd> But once the JWST is up, we're only going to pay for ground stations to receive the data and a few scientists to analyze it.
[19:35:04] <AndyTheAbsurd> Well, you don't kill government programs just because they're behind schedule and over budget - that's *every* government program. But the F-35 has also proved more costly to operate than expected, with more down time than planned, and those are very likely going to be an ongoing issues for as long as we're using them.
[19:29:25] <boru> I was just commenting that the JWST also falls into this category.
[19:29:08] <boru> < AndyTheAbsurd> Everything about the F-35 is over budget and behind schedule
[19:28:58] <boru> You're digressing from the point completely.
[19:28:23] <AndyTheAbsurd> "monetary return on investment" in the case of ANY government program would result in lowering of taxes. I don't see a path for that to happen with either the F-35 or the JWST...but at least the JWST won't be used to attack people who don't have anything against America, thereby turning their kids into future terrorists.
[19:27:55] <boru> NOAA, too, who also seem horrendously underfunded at the moment...
[19:27:30] <boru> I'd much rather see the Oded Yinon plan/Israeli MIC destructed and that money pumped into NASA projects.
[19:25:40] <boru> Playing devil's advocate here, in case that's not obvious.
[19:25:20] <boru> They're both programs, and the F-35 will have monetary return on investment.
[19:19:54] <AndyTheAbsurd> We're only building one JWST, thought. Not thousands.
[19:17:03] <boru> You could say the same about the James Webb Space Telescope.

[15:34:39] <Sulla> Pre-preggers. So should be able to return to that soon.
[15:31:59] <Runaway1956> I like your wife already Sulla
[15:31:54] <Sulla> Didnt work this year in australia from what I heard
[15:31:39] <Runaway1956> The thing is, the last tetanus died in New Zealand about 80 years ago. They're extinct.

[15:31:31] <Sulla> Runaway: Thats my wifes measurement.
[15:30:36] * Bytram was at doc for another issue, before Iknew it, I'd been given both a flu shot AND a tetanus shot... toook a week to recover from those
[15:29:41] <Runaway1956> Mmmm - everyoe at work is doing that. I told them that I'd like to take the flu shot, but I was allergic to needles.

[15:23:18] <cmn32480> was that what we found in that baggie in the font yeard?
[15:22:58] <Runaway1956> Did you find my kid's weed that he spilled?
[15:22:53] <Bytram> sounds quieter atm... yays!
[15:22:23] <Bytram> now that you mention it, I just noticed my lappy has been running warm, so I just vacuumed out the keyboard... let's see if that helps with ventilation / cooling
[15:21:14] <Bytram> was not aware of that... but I do well recall their less-than-entirely business practices wrt monopoly-type activites
[15:19:10] <Runaway1956> Publish a compiler, that only optimizes code if it's running on an intel chip? Phhhhtttt.

[15:15:59] <Bytram> was wondering what had happened. sorry to hear that.
