[09:46:58] <boru> pinchy; seems pretty standard in terms of skillset. There isn't much detail to go on, though. One thing I will say is that when I see 'C/C++' on a job spec, it's a red flag. Someone, somewhere, thinks they're the same language. Also, it just looks like they're looking for C++ programmers, which in turn implies embedded applications (with Linux) as opposed to real meaty deeply embedded work.
[09:54:35] * TheMightyBuzzard is no longer embedded
[09:54:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> coffee++
[09:54:36] <Bender> karma - coffee: 3640
[09:54:50] <boru> You have debedded yourself?
[09:54:58] <TheMightyBuzzard> every morning
[09:55:33] <boru> Upstanding.
[09:55:57] <TheMightyBuzzard> no, downsitting. standing desks are for hipsters.
[09:57:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> stuff i'm starting on sometime this week is proper embedded. only pansies need an OS running beneath the code they write.
[09:57:38] <boru> Quite right.
[09:59:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> lemme tell ya though, i am right glad someone decided to take the arduino and industrialize it. it's nice to be able to learn from other people's mistakes before making them yourself.
[10:00:51] <boru> AVR wasn't ever my thing, personally.
[10:04:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> i'm not particular. just give me the specs on the microprocessor and i can code for it. not having to solder together your own programmer makes my lazy happy though.
[10:04:43] * TheMightyBuzzard gives the finger to a couple sitting on his dresser that he had to build a programmer for
[10:06:50] * FatPhil is a pansy
[10:07:15] * FatPhil decided to write an OS his code could run on top of
[10:07:39] <FatPhil> for a laugh, I did it in C++
[10:07:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> #smake FatPhil
[10:07:56] * MrPlow smakes FatPhil upside the head with dire ear
[10:09:10] <FatPhil> don't worry, it was 1990s C++, not the modern kitchen sink abomination.
[10:09:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> well if it was just for a laugh, that's okay
[10:09:58] <boru> A very painful, perverse laugh.
[10:10:27] <FatPhil> nah, it was a microkernel, it was only about 5K of object code
[10:10:46] * TheMightyBuzzard ponders writing one in rust to annoy embedded devs everywhere
[10:11:05] <boru> 5K of code for 10 lines, knowing C++!
[10:11:10] <FatPhil> preemptive multitasking, complete with priority inversion, just how you hate it.
[10:11:25] <FatPhil> 1990s C++
[10:11:38] <FatPhil> CFront 2-ish
[10:12:06] <FatPhil> they's started taking abouttemplates and exceptions, but not implemented them yet
[10:12:28] <boru> I think Rust suffers from the same problem as Ada; having to cut down and port the core.
[10:13:13] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, i have yet to build a binary in rust that'd even fit on any microprocessor worth the name.
[10:13:18] <boru> Aye, went downhill after C++98.
[10:15:22] * TheMightyBuzzard answers the call of his nicotine interrupt
[10:15:52] <boru> That one's an NMI, eh?
[10:16:18] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Florida Sheriff Offers Jail as ‘Secure Shelter’ for Those With Warrants Fleeing Hurricane Irma - http://sylnt.us - sounds-good
[10:20:30] <FatPhil> Nicotine Mainlining Interrupt?
[10:20:42] * boru chuckles.
[10:21:35] <FatPhil> the best thing about having a bellyful last night is that it only takes one drink in the morning to get back on the boost bus.
[10:21:53] <boru> Hair of the dog, and all that.
[10:22:12] <FatPhil> now drinking a rather delicious dry Saaremaa cider.
[10:22:25] <FatPhil> Oh, I don't get hangovers.
[10:22:43] <boru> Aye, nor I.
[10:23:02] <TheMightyBuzzard> bastards
[10:23:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> i had an entire day of blah yesterday after like a six pack
[10:23:55] <TheMightyBuzzard> not a proper hangover but still
[10:25:44] <FatPhil> Mum had the alcoholics gene, and she thoughtfully passed it on to me.
[10:27:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> forgot how much i missed playing with proper hardware interrupts. though now i have to remember how to keep from leaving an output high longer than it should be if another input is interrupting.
[10:28:38] <FatPhil> how smart is the interrupt controler?
[10:29:15] <FatPhil> priorities make things easier, and then make things harder as revenge.
[10:29:49] <TheMightyBuzzard> really, i can probably get away with leaving it high. the granularity of the equipment reading that pulse isn't any sharper than the Hz range while the microprocessor runs at the MHz range.
[10:29:58] <FatPhil> my handy hint - have a preemptive microkernel, and do nothing but post a message, then RETI
[10:30:56] <FatPhil> i like interrup controolers that disable interrupts whilst in an interrupt handler.
[10:31:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, i'll prolly just write one function for handling interrupts and let all the logic hang there.
[10:31:15] <FatPhil> some fucker in this cafe has ordered bacon
[10:31:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> as well he should have
[10:31:39] <FatPhil> did I tell you how much bacon I had for breakfast?
[10:31:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> all of it, i hope.
[10:32:11] <FatPhil> http://fatphil.org
[10:32:37] <FatPhil> that's g/f's plate, I had the same amount or more
[10:32:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> is that fish under your bacon?
[10:32:53] <FatPhil> yes, really meaty herring
[10:33:05] <FatPhil> beautiful
[10:33:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> man, i like fish, don't get me wrong, but the two do not go together.
[10:33:36] <FatPhil> we didm5 notice the bacon until we'd served a plate of fishy goodness
[10:33:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh, that's acceptable then.
[10:34:07] <FatPhil> we accepted it :-D
[10:36:58] <TheMightyBuzzard> aight, gonna bail and get my vidya in while i still have a few days to do so. gonna be too busy coding and debugging once the dev hardware gets in next week.
[10:37:28] * TheMightyBuzzard waves
[10:37:41] * boru measures your frequency.
[10:45:28] <FatPhil> to err is human,
[10:45:34] <FatPhil> to waver, cosine
