[02:47:23] <mrcoolbp> heavy progressive rock
[02:47:27] <mrcoolbp> close though.
[02:47:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> yeah, sister genres from way back
[02:48:31] <TheMightyBuzzard> and if they aren't, yankovick can make them so
[02:49:35] <mrcoolbp> if anyone can...
[02:50:39] <mrcoolbp> good ole Al can.
[02:51:32] <TheMightyBuzzard> just had to break out some angry whiteboy polka
[02:51:44] <mrcoolbp> my fav is "White and Nerdy"
[02:52:08] <chromas> I heard that before hearing the original song; the Al version is better
[02:52:11] <TheMightyBuzzard> also excellent.
[02:52:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> all about the pentiums is a good coding song
[02:52:50] <mrcoolbp> tru

[03:09:08] * mrcoolbp runs off in a hurry
[03:12:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> too! many! channels!
[03:16:01] <juggs> yeh the fragmentation is starting to get a little silly.
[03:16:23] <SpallsHurgenson> my toes are hot
[03:16:42] <TheMightyBuzzard> SpallsHurgenson, they sure are.
[03:16:55] <SpallsHurgenson> I need a fan on the floor just for my feet.
[03:16:59] <SpallsHurgenson> god, I miss AC
[03:19:30] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm pretty sure I'm a mutant branch of the homo sapien sapiens line that has evolved only to live in air conditioned environments
[03:19:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> ugh, need 45 minutes of distraction to keep me awake
[03:20:08] <SpallsHurgenson> turn on Fox news
[03:20:26] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, too easy to sleep through
[03:20:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> tv news is worthless cept for the weather
[03:21:17] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Do Doctors Understand Test Results? - http://sylnt.us - dr.-speltz
[03:23:38] <SpallsHurgenson> being a doctor these days has to suck. Used to be it was a position of prestige; you got respect, were thought of as being well-educated, you had power over people's lives, and great pay
[03:24:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, now you mostly just spend 5m with a patient and 55 on paperwork
[03:24:38] <SpallsHurgenson> now everyone looks on the internet and thinks they know more than you, they hate you for not fixing their problems immediately, you are tied down by HMO red-tape and plumbers make more than you with less legal worries
[03:25:40] <SpallsHurgenson> on the other hand, all the free pens you could ever want from the pharmaceutical companies! :)
[03:28:12] <chromas> and staplers and mugs
[03:28:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> they see me strollin, they laughin
[03:28:36] <SpallsHurgenson> big gift fruit baskets too.
[03:30:39] <TheMightyBuzzard> hell with it. the cats can go to bed early tonight. i'm too tired to stay up to their normal bedtime.
[03:32:25] <SpallsHurgenson> cat bedtime is 10AM
[03:52:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> sleep time now. yeah, I'm old.
[03:53:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> ~time TheMightyBuzzard
[03:53:30] * TheMightyBuzzard shurgs and heads off
[04:07:55] -!- BlackHole [BlackHole!~4c77e8d9@f-09-442-560-040.hsd9.ma.comcast.net] has parted #Soylent

[04:22:49] <SpallsHurgenson> old is when you log onto IRC and then fall asleep before saying anything :)
[04:27:28] -!- rand has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[04:31:26] <juggs> old is a state of mind, old is a moving target - as we age old never comes appears to come any nearer, we may no longer be young (that we can shrug off as - "grown up") - but who in their right mind would admit to, or allow themselves to think of themselves as being old? Might as well start digging our own graves and constructing our own boxes to climb into.
[04:32:34] <SpallsHurgenson> trust me, there's a point where you no longer can believe it is just a "state of mind" :)
[04:44:20] <juggs> that's mental frailty - you can stay young of mind whilst the body becomes decrepit around the mind. I suppose it is a matter of where you are viewing yourself from or how you perceive "you" to be, what do you perceive "you" to be? If you are solely and completely embodied by your physical form then yes life is just a match burning down, sooner or later there will be nothing left.
[04:48:51] <juggs> gawd, does no-one bother with textual change logs anymore? No need for that, when you can just diff 1000s of source files to work out what changed.
[04:50:55] -!- SirFinkus [SirFinkus!~SirFinkus@l-64-313-06-125.hsd0.wa.comcast.net] has joined #Soylent
[05:00:31] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Same Genes Drive Maths and Reading Ability - http://sylnt.us - genetically-destined-for-mediocrity
[05:09:48] <chromas> Then why is it I can see better than I can math?
[05:09:55] <chromas> er wait, it says "read"
[05:18:17] <juggs> doesn't that depend rather on the comparative scales you are measuring your seeing, math and reading ability? Are the test scenarios for "seeing" or "reading" or "maths" assessment even sane? We seem to have devolved to pop-sci.
[05:19:04] <chromas> it was a bad joke
[05:19:49] <chromas> so long as we don't devolve to The Learning Channel
[05:20:02] <juggs> the joke was poor granted but the article is just correlation
[05:20:25] * chromas should probably click the link
[05:20:30] <juggs> nah
[05:20:37] <chromas> The shortened url was a good one, though
[05:21:01] <juggs> I didn't spot that
[05:21:04] <juggs> :D
[05:22:53] <chromas> Hm. I can't get more karma so that means I need to make room
[05:22:57] <juggs> I take it The Learning Channel is some TV channel littered with adverts offering snippets of information?
[05:23:30] <SpallsHurgenson> the learning channel hasn't had information on it in 20 years
[05:23:45] <SpallsHurgenson> it makes the History Channel look INTELLECTUAL
[05:24:35] <chromas> It's an American tv channel where each show segment starts with a review of what you saw last, then shows clips of what you're going to see, then shows what they previewed, then reviews what you just saw before they show what you're going to see after the next ad break
[05:25:52] <SpallsHurgenson> and what you are seeing is shows like "19 kids and counting", "Say Yes to the Dress" and "The Cake Boss"
[05:27:01] <chromas> "Look at these people who won't throw anything away lololol!!"
[05:27:54] <juggs> I've no idea what the History Channel serves up either. Last I checked we had acquired some Quest channels. Then some git stole my coax to the rooftop aerial (presumably to weigh in as scrap). I didn't bother getting it replaced.
[05:28:20] <chromas> History Channel is aliens and Hitler
[05:28:30] <juggs> lol
[05:28:31] <chromas> and pawn shops for some reason
[05:28:55] <SpallsHurgenson> I wish it was hitler and aliens
[05:29:04] <juggs> breaking open storage lockers that have defaulted? That was a quest thing I think.
[05:29:11] <chromas> they occasionally have an 'expert' appraise some item and mention something about the 1940s and so I guess that makes it historical
[05:29:29] <SpallsHurgenson> these days it's pawn shops, swamp people and "big rig bounty hunters"
[05:29:51] <SpallsHurgenson> god, I feel stupider just for typing that last show title
[05:30:17] * chromas remembers TechTV
[05:30:51] * SpallsHurgenson gave up on TV years ago
[05:31:27] <juggs> oh wasn't there some series about a guy running around digging for american revolution artifacts... anyway, I'm glad the thieving gits stole my copper.
[05:31:51] <chromas> Some of the people who got fired from TechTV moved to the interwebz. I tried watching some of it but then I realized it's just hipsters talking about their ipods
[05:33:58] <SpallsHurgenson> I dunno, I used to listen to Leo Laporte o Twit.tv
[05:34:06] <chromas> But for some reason I picture Kevin Pereira as the singer for Modest Mouse
[05:34:08] <SpallsHurgenson> he was fun, and sometimes informative
[05:34:29] <juggs> I wonder what the BBC will do when the people of the UK wake up and realise they don't really have to pay that license demand that plopped on the doormat. Presumably just reword the law to something like "if you have eyes you will pay this".
[05:35:07] <chromas> Haven't Leo in a while. There used to be a guy in the local Radio Shack who reminded me of a Mexican version of him
[05:35:15] <chromas> I accidentally the verb
[05:35:49] <chromas> I heard they have inspectors or something who come a-knockin'; is that true?
[05:37:29] * chromas is on the backup ircd
[05:40:24] -!- SpallsHurgenson has quit [Quit: old]
[05:43:17] * mrcoolbp is too
[05:52:16] * monopoly is too…you know, in case someone pastes a link :D
[05:53:31] <juggs> yes it is true. TV licensing has been outsourced to TVL (private corp). You get a letter plop demanding the fee, which you can check a box to say you don't need a license, or just ignore. Either way, an inspector will need to visit to verify that no license is required. As they are a private corp it's easy enough to deny them assumed right of access by sending a follow up letter. As it goes I quite like the BBC for the breadth of stuff they cover, b
[05:53:32] <juggs> ut money by menaces is not cool - that approach gets nowt.
[05:55:21] <chromas> I like a few of their shows, too, except for Little Britain
[06:01:30] <juggs> yeah some of the output is cringe worthy islander stuff. But ech we're on an over populated rock in the north atlantic, a rock many never leave, excuse our TV output.
[06:02:04] <juggs> we do out best
[06:02:10] <chromas> only if you'll excuse ours :D
[06:02:44] <chromas> and we don't even try anymore
[06:15:21] <juggs> phlergh. it's all become inexcusable garbage. I just hope the beeb can support themselves by exporting top gear and attenborough docs. I doubt it though, the whole thing is tied up in red tape, it can only end in a fiery plunge into the nearest sun.
[06:18:11] <juggs> oh,,, and dr who of course..... as long as they bring the crying angels back
[06:20:25] <arti> :D
[06:20:28] <arti> greetings
[06:20:32] <juggs> I'd pay good money to see a crying angels vs humanity film or series.
[06:20:40] <juggs> greetings arti
[06:21:31] <arti> there's really a show called big rig bounty hunters
[06:21:56] <arti> do they take a bunch of things and pop them into a randomizer (or just write them on scraps of paper and draw from a hat) for reality show ideas
[06:23:06] <juggs> s/crying angels/weeping angels in all the above
[06:23:06] * SedBot tosses a / to jyggs
[06:23:12] <juggs> yes yes

[06:24:18] <arti> "wtf, colors"

[13:38:28] <d33tah> redesign</a>. Thank you, from the editors, coders, and designers.
[13:38:30] <d33tah> We can't respond individually to every email, but we are both reading and

[13:38:34] <d33tah> site over the years, particularly when we make changes that effect the way the

[13:38:38] <d33tah> And this isn't the first time that we've been through this process. We value

[14:47:50] <prospectacle> sometimes I wish I had a job with travel. Then other times they're looking for someone to travel and I think "don't ask me, don't ask me"
[14:47:52] <crutchy> weeds++ busy is good
[14:47:53] <Bender> karma - weeds: 5
[14:48:03] <prospectacle> What kind of work do you do?
[14:48:38] <crutchy> i kinda hate going out to client sites sometimes. mainly when its cold/wet
[14:49:23] <crutchy> or stinky
[14:49:50] <prospectacle> well it's forecast for stinky, but only a 40% chance
[14:49:51] <crutchy> (paper mills are stinky places... i don't much like going out to the one of those nearby)
[14:50:43] <crutchy> 100% chance of stinky at chromas' place, with added dog
[14:51:23] <chromas> Paper mill smells better than dogfart
[14:51:49] <crutchy> i dunno. it would have to be a pretty bad dogfart to outstink black liquor
[14:52:01] <chromas> Plus they have the cool steam clouds
[14:52:43] <crutchy> if you see yellow that's when you run :-P
[14:52:55] <crutchy> or is it blue. can't remember
[14:53:19] <prospectacle> I used to work from home, which seems great on the surface. Probably most people have desired it at some point. It's not good though. Not full time.
[14:53:29] <chromas> I haven't actually been in, so there could be other smells I don't know
[14:53:39] <crutchy> home isn't meant to be productive
[14:53:47] <crutchy> (except in the bedroom)
[14:54:05] <prospectacle> Was great at first. Like a dream come true. Then a few months later I was like "I should go for a walk I haven't been out of the house in about three days, I'll get rickets"
[14:54:29] <weeds> Browser based document management software. I am a working manager
[14:55:00] <prospectacle> weeds that sounds really interesting. Do you have to travel for clients, or cause it's a big/spread out company?
[14:56:05] <weeds> a little of both. last couple of weeks it was travel to Fla to train a customer and last week was travel to philly (mother ship) for meetings.
[14:57:03] <weeds> prospectacle: What do you do?
[14:57:05] <prospectacle> Sounds like things are going well if they can afford to send real people out on training.
[14:57:30] <prospectacle> weeds, also (mostly) browser based stuff, reporting and the like. But not management, i'm a code monkey
[14:58:03] <prospectacle> I suppose I should learn to manage one of these days. That's where the money is.
[14:58:11] <weeds> A big section of our customers are in the electric power business. Generation and transmission as well as distribution. A good business to be in!
[14:58:44] <prospectacle> Yeah, I heard electric power is quite popular these days among key demographics
[14:59:08] <weeds> :)
[14:59:15] <crutchy> do you do erp software, like maximo
[14:59:59] <crutchy> or eam, or whatever the acronym is :-P

[15:00:52] <monopoly> ^ 03e-DMS.NET | Enterprise Content Management | VanSystems.com: VanSystems.com is proud to offer e-DMS.NET, an amazing electronic content management program for businesses.
[15:01:14] <prospectacle> seems like anything that can save big organisations time and paperwork is the money
[15:01:27] <weeds> amazing? I have to talk to our marketing people...
[15:01:58] <crutchy> is it for things like permits and reports and drawings and stuff?
[15:02:18] <crutchy> sorry if i'm being nosey. i'm pretty close to that industry myself :-D
[15:02:32] <crutchy> (from a different angle though)
[15:04:49] <weeds> crutchy: no worries, happy to talk about it. the system is file format agnotic. Most of our customers use it for scanned documents (like invoices), and AutoCAD.
[15:05:26] <crutchy> ooh autocad *shudders*
[15:05:58] * crutchy is somewhat professionally experienced with autocrap
[15:06:40] <weeds> No problem, Our viewer can open 200+ file formats or pass the file to the OS. We don't edit it, just store it, chekout and check in and display.
[15:06:47] <prospectacle> Sometimes it amazes me how much extra work computers create (managing versions, transfers, backups) but then I remember that real paper had all those problems, times 10.
[15:07:26] <prospectacle> it's better on computers, as long as you don't expect them to never break, or to read your mind.
[15:09:23] <crutchy> weeds: the check in/check out sounds interesting. might be nice to find a substitute for autodesk vault to manage big inventor projects
[15:10:18] <prospectacle> weeds, so does the viewer open stuff in the browser: pdfs, autocads, etc (the 200+)?
[15:10:32] <prospectacle> If so, does it use a plugin or have you managed to do all this with regular web languages?
[15:11:08] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - British Start Up Allows Google Glass to Take Photos Using Brainwaves - http://sylnt.us - Pure-Energy
[15:11:48] <weeds> Yes it does. Unfortunately the version we have now is an active x control. It also has markup capability
[15:12:38] <prospectacle> I was gonna say, that would be hard to do without a plugin. Possible, no doubt, but pretty incredible
[15:15:30] <crutchy> could do it using pdf
[15:15:55] <weeds> pdf is supported
[15:15:56] <prospectacle> yeah firefox .js pdf viewer is pretty nifty
[15:16:09] <prospectacle> but i'd be amazed if someone had done that for 200+ formats.
[15:16:27] <prospectacle> that would be "amazing"
[15:16:31] <crutchy> dunno if its just in adobe pdf reader, but you can view 3d models in adobe reader (and spin them around, pan, zoom, turn parts on/off etc)
[15:16:45] <crutchy> no extra software required
[15:17:05] <crutchy> we send our clients '3D PDFs' all the time now
[15:17:23] <crutchy> they reckon its the best thing since sliced bread
[15:17:34] <prospectacle> cool i didnt know you could do that
[15:18:04] <crutchy> till i saw this i always wondered why adobe reader was so bloated
[15:18:20] <crutchy> i dunno if it works in any other pdf reader. haven't tried tbh
[15:18:36] <prospectacle> yeah it would be interesting to know if it works in the firefox version
[15:18:57] <crutchy> you just need a specific program to create the pdf file from a dwfx file
[15:19:18] <crutchy> yeah that's what i was thinking. cos then you wouldn't need extra plugins
[15:20:16] <crutchy> i dunno what its called cos i don't make them. usually i just create the dwfx file and get someone who knows what they're doing to work the program :-P
[15:24:22] <crutchy> i bookmarked your company website weeds :-)
